On December 7, 2019 (Saturday), NTT West Tokai Group held a "Higashiyama Forest Restoration Project" activity at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens in Nagoya City.

As with last year, this third round of activity for the project was held as part of the social action program of Tokai Group titled "forest thinning for creation of satoyama (village forest)" to maintain the forests in Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens and preserve the beauty of the forests.
Trees that are left to grow without care in the forest cause damage to one another due to the overgrown branches and block out sunlight needed for the growth of animals and plants, so thinning is performed in order to conserve the forest environment.

A total of 34 participants, including employees from Tokai Group, took part in the event.
After the opening ceremony, the staff of Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens provided guidance on how to wear the helmet and use the saw, after which the participants were divided into six teams to engage in the tree-thinning work.

Participants began to cut down trees one after another upon entering the dense forest, and some challenged trees with a trunk diameter of more than 10cm. It was more exhausting than expected to cut the trees as they were not familiar with how to use the saws. At the same time, however, this also made the process more enjoyable and many of the participants engaged enthusiastically in the work. Despite the low temperature and chilly weather on the day of the event, the participants found themselves perspiring as they devoted their attention to the work.

At the end of the work, which completed safely in about an hour without any injury, the participants felt refreshed with a sense of achievement when sunlight began to stream through, transforming the dark forest into a bright place.

A monument of cicada made from a single log using only chainsaw was also unveiled before the start of the activity. It was installed inside the garden as evidence of engagement in the project.

NTT West Tokai Group will continue to raise awareness toward sustainable biodiversity conservation and strive to promote such efforts by engaging actively in social action programs that can be participated and supported by our employees and their family members.
