Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 356Pine Forest Conservation Activity at Fukui Beach of Itoshima City October 5, 2019 NTT West Fukuoka Group

On October 5, 2019 (Saturday), NTT West Fukuoka Group held the 10th round of pine forest conservation activity at Fukui Beach located in Fukuoka Prefecture, Itoshima City, Nijo-Fukui.

This activity makes use of the Adopt Program of Itoshima City that was introduced in August 2014 with the aim of conserving the pine forest and preserving and handing down the beautiful landscape of the white sand and green pines to future generations. Under this system, segments that are assigned by Itoshima City are regarded as "foster (adopted) children" for cleaning and beautification activities to be carried out in the long term by the participants, who are the "foster parents."

In recent years, there has been an increasing number of pine wilt due to damage caused by pine weevils. In the four years from 2010 to 2013, more than 50,000 pine trees (equivalent to about 25% of the total number) were felled due to pine wilt.
To prevent such damage from spreading, it is important to get rid of fallen dead branches and pine needles where pine weevils tend to hide. Also, weeding and cleaning make it easy for people to access the forest and help to prevent pine weevils from entering, thus effective for protecting the pine forest.

Under the clear autumn sky on the day of the event, work was performed with support from the "Pine Forest Preservation Society," the body that was commissioned to manage the Itoshima City Adopt Project.
A total of 105 participants, including employees of Fukuoka Group and their family members, spent about an hour's time to protect the beautiful pine forest from damage caused by pine weevils by picking up branches and pine needles as well as performing weeding. 40 bags of branches and weeds were collected in total.

When the activity first started five years ago, it was impossible to set foot in the forest as it was filled with dead branches and undergrowth. Thanks to the support from the large number of participants in the past and current rounds of activities, the pine forest is now in a well-maintained state. At the same time, this activity has helped to reduce the number of pine wilt cases in the entire city from about 30,000 trees in FY2012 to about 300 in FY2015, which is about 1% compared to the number during the peak.

NTT West Fukuoka Group will unite its efforts to promote the "Midori Ippai Project" while continuing to deepen its cooperative ties with the local government bodies and other organizations.
