Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 325FY2018 "2nd Adopt Program Yoshino River" (River Cleanup) Activity October 21, 2018 NTT West Tokushima Group

On October 21, 2018 (Sunday), NTT West Tokushima Group held the second round of "Adopt Program Yoshino River" activity to clean up the riverbed of Yoshino River.

This Adopt Program is a project that divides the riverbed of Yoshino River into segments, and participants (companies, groups, etc.) are invited to "adopt" a riverbed segment and become its "foster parent."

These "foster parents" would carry out cleanup and beautification activities periodically (at least three times a year) at the assigned riverbed segment, which is their "foster child."

Started in 1999, more than 1,000 companies and groups are currently helping to clean up the levee and riverbed of Yoshino River along a stretch of almost 100km.

NTT West Tokushima Group is in charge of a 600m segment of riverbed and levee on the left bank that is 1,400m to 2,000m upstream from the mouth of Yoshino River.

The October activity is always held in conjunction with the "NTT West Clean Environment Mission." Blessed with fine weather on the day of the event, a total of about 87 participants, including employees and family members of Tokushima Group as well as retired employees, gathered at 8 a.m. to take part in the cleanup activity, which lasted for about an hour.

As the area to clean up is near the mouth of Yoshino River, participants collected large quantities of litter and illegally disposed household wastes that were washed shore.

Trash collected included 17 bags of combustible garbage, eight bags of non-combustible garbage (including recyclable wastes), plastic wastes that need to be disposed of as industrial waste: hard rubber hoses, plastic tanks, plastic buckets, plastic containers and cones and polystyrene foam boxes. Industrial waste collector was contacted to handle this type of trash. Meanwhile, Tokushima Office of River and National Highway (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) was contacted for the disposal of bulky trash (medium-sized refrigerator).

At the end of the activity, Mr. Fujimoto, Manager of NTT West Tokushima Branch General Affairs Department as well as the secretariat representative, mentioned that the third Yoshino River cleaning activity will be scheduled before the "Tokushima Marathon 2019" event on March 17, 2019, and looked forward to seeing a huge turnout again. He also thanked the participants for their support. The activity came to a close with a group photo-taking session for all the participants with the beautified Yoshino River as the backdrop.

We believe the participants felt good to engage in work to beautify Yoshino River under the fine weather. NTT West Tokushima Group will continue to participate actively in the river cleanup and beautification activities.
