On November 18, 2018 (Sunday), the "16th Abe River Driftwood Cleanup Festival" (hosted by the executive committee including Shizuoka Office of Rivers under Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism) was held at Abekawa Shinsui Recreation Square in Aoi-ku of Shizuoka City. A total of 116 employees, family members and retirees of NTT West Shizuoka Group took part in this activity.

Approximately 51km in length, the source of Abe River is Mount Oyarei, Mount Hakkorei and Abe Pass, which lead to Shirane South Ridge of the Southern Alps. It is a torrential river that flows from Mount Oyarei which is about 2,000m in height into Suruga Bay, the deepest in Japan which reaches 2,500m at the deepest point.

For this reason, the water level rises when there is typhoon or heavy rainfall, which brings along with it large quantities of driftwood to the riverbed, river mouth and the seashore.

Driftwood constitutes an issue at Abe River, as its impact is not limited to rivers, but extends further to environmental pollution of the local environment, devastation of mountain forests and damage on the fishery industry.

This year, there were frequent typhoons and heavy rainfalls which also caused damage in Shizuoka Prefecture and resulted in driftwood of different sizes and large quantities of trash being washed ashore onto the riverbed.

The "Abe River Driftwood Cleanup Festival" is a yearly activity to pick up driftwood and trash by the river after the typhoon season. This year, about 1,200 members from companies and groups took part in the event.

To restore the beautiful scenery of the riverbed and the surrounding areas, the participants united their effort and worked up a good sweat to pick up driftwood and trash, which helped to make the riverbed amazingly clean again.

NTT West Shizuoka Group will continue to engage enthusiastically in efforts to protect the global environment with the mission to preserve the beautiful and bountiful nature and hand it down to future generations.
