Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 206Weeding of Non-native Plants, etc. May 18 to October 31, 2016 NTT West Fukui Group

NTT West Fukui Group carries out weeding activities yearly from May to October at company housing areas, sites where bachelors' apartments were located and inside the premises of unmanned switching centers throughout Fukui Prefecture. In FY2016, weeding was performed at 29 out of the total of 44 sites.

The weeding area of each site ranges widely from about 100 sqm to more than 800 sqm. Besides indigenous plants such as Japanese pampas grass, Japanese mugwort and Japanese arrowroot, there were also areas that were densely covered with non-native plants such as goldenrod, a typical example that is a perennial composite originated in North America.

Although one of the purposes of the weeding activity was to create parking space for work vehicles, it is also part of the effort to protect the environment through removal of non-native plants as well as to contribute to the local communities by beautifying the sites which are next to fields and residential areas as grass and plants that are left to grow freely would stand out and look unpresentable.

Between May 18 and June 7, 2016, a total of 31 employees took part in the weeding activity at 22 locations, while a total of 32 employees participated in the activity at 20 locations in the second half of the year from August 26 to October 31.
In the earlier half of the year, it was easy to operate the brushcutter as weather conditions were fine and the grass was still young and soft. The second half of the activity, however, was a tough battle as the participants were drenched in sweat while they worked under the intense heat of the late summer, and the harder stalk of the goldenrod and vines of the Japanese arrowroot also tend to get entangled in the brushcutter.

At the end of the weeding activity, the participants quenched their thirst with cold tea as they enjoyed watching the fruits of their beautification efforts with a sense of accomplishment, feeling motivated to carry out the next round of weeding.

Although the yearly weeding activity is a challenging task, we believe keeping the premises of NTT clean and beautiful helps to contribute to both the local communities as well as conservation of the global environment. NTT West Fukui Group will continue to engage in the weeding activities in NTT premises.
