Training program for FTTH Network construction in Singapore



NTT West(HQ:Osaka, President:Shinichi Otake) plans to provide a training programme for FTTH network contractors and installers who participate in the construction of the next generation broadband network “Next Gen NBN” (*2) led by OpenNet (*1) (HQ:Singapore, CEO:Tan Kah-Rhu), in Singapore.

Singapore’s next generation broadband network. It is aimed to provide FTTH network services with the speed of over 1Gbps to almost all households and offices by 2012. It is constructed under the direction of OpenNet.


1.Background

NTT West utilizes its technologies and know-hows gained by providing FTTH network services to more than 6 million customers, and aims to contribute the developments in the field of information communication. NTT West devotes to create new business and to build relations with telecommunication carriers oversea.

NTT West has exchanged opinions and information about its advanced technologies and experiences on FTTH network services to the government and companies in Singapore that are constructing “Next Gen NBN” as a national project.

Under the coordination of a consulting firm, FiberOpto Asia (*3), the training programme was introduced to contractors in Singapore, providing an expert from NTT West as the lecturer. The first programme underwent from 5th July to 9th July, 2010.

The training received high evaluation from the trainees such that they were able to learn the technologies based on the rich experiences of FTTH network construction. It has been decided that the training programme be continued, due to the request from FiberOpto Asia and OpenNet.

2.Objective

Through this training programme, NTT West contributes to the development of human resources in Singapore by providing Japan’s advanced FTTH technologies and NTT West’s know-hows on FTTH network.


3.Contens of the training programme

(1)Length of the programme: 4th October-8th October, 2010 (4 courses, 2 days per course)

(2) Trainees: contractors involved in “Next Gen NBN” (Maximum 20 per course, 80 trainees are expected altogether)

(3) Summary of the programme: the training consists of lectures on basic knowledge on FTTH technologies, and practicals on basic construction techniques such as splicing and testing . NTT West takes part of lectures and other telecommunication engineering company (i.e. Kyowa Exeo Corporation) takes part of practicals.

(4)Contents of the programme:
-Lectures
- Broadband environment and services in Japan
- Basics of FTTH and FTTH network
(optical transmission system, FTTH technology, splicing, differences between FTTH and DSL, examples of FTTH network, management technologies, etc.)
- Safety measurements: detection of danger and precaution measures
-Practicals
- Handling and splicing of the optical fiber, closure set-up, normality test, etc.


4.Roles of each player

[FiberOpto Asia]
- Hosting the training programme
- Organizing place, textbook, equipment, evaluation, etc.
[OpenNet]
- Recommending the programme to contractors involved in Next Gen NBN
[NTT West]
- Lecturing by a FTTH expert and supporting practicals
- Supporting trainees and organizing the training programme


5. Further development

This training programme is expected to be continued in Singapore. NTT West plans to deploy in other countries undergoing the construction of FTTH networks, and also, plans to deploy its technologies and experiences gained from FTTH network services.


About OpenNet:
OpenNet was established in 2008, and is a joint venture between four partners — Axia NetMedia (Axia), Singapore Telecommunications (SingTel), Singapore Press Holdings (SPH) and SP Telecommunications (SPT). The Infocomm Development Authority of Singapore (IDA), has awarded OpenNet the contract to build, manage and operate a nationwide all-fibre platform for Singapore’s Next Generation Nationwide Broadband Network (Next Gen NBN). OpenNet is now in the process of construction of Next Gen NBN, and expects to provide FTTH environment to almost all households and offices by 2012.
