The world around us is becoming increasingly uncertain with the frequent occurrence of natural disasters including floods and catastrophic fires at different places due to extreme weather events such as record-breaking torrential rain and heat wave, coupled with the worldwide spread of COVID-19. It is important to ensure sustainable conservation of the global environment in order to maintain and improve sustainability of the economy and society in the long run. As a company that contributes to solving social issues, NTT West Group strives to lighten the environmental burden and minimize the environmental footprint by us with the use of ICT to build a society that is symbiotic with the environment. In 2019, we formulated the "NTT West Group Environmental Declaration" and "NTT West Group Environmental Goals" with the main aim of reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and have engaged actively in the promotion of a carbon-free and resource-recycling society as well as efforts to conserve biodiversity.

As part of our activities in FY2019 to promote a carbon-free society, we contributed to cutting down greenhouse gas emissions from our customers by offering cloud-based and network services, among others, to reduce the flow of people and goods. Meanwhile, for greenhouse gas emissions from our Group, we achieved the reduction targets through initiatives to reduce power consumption and converting our company vehicles to EVs. For promotion of a resource-recycling society, we increased the waste recycling rate to lower the final disposal rate, while at the same time engaged in activities to reduce single-use plastics as part of the measures to address marine plastics. Also, we carried out nature protection activities including tree-planting and satoyama (village forest) conservation under the "Midori Ippai Project," an initiative to conserve biodiversity which is participated by more than 10,000 NTT West Group employees and their family members in one year.

Through our future endeavors on the new environmental vision of NTT Group, "zero environmental footprint," which include promoting an increase in the ratio of green electricity to 30% by 2030, addressing climate change and other global environment issues as well as more effective utilization of ICT services, will achieve a zero environment footprint society and make collective efforts as a Group to contribute to "building a society that is symbiotic with the environment."
