Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 377Rice Terrace Conservation Activity by Corporate Volunteers (October) October 19, 2019 NTT West Saga Group

On October 19, 2019 (Saturday), as part of the "Midori Ippai Project" initiative, NTT West Saga Group took part in the weeding and sweet potato digging work of the "rice terrace conservation activity" jointly with members of the Nakanotsuru Residents' Association in Saga City, Mitsuse-mura.

Marking the sixth round this time, this activity was launched as a part of the corporate volunteer initiative based on the "Agreement on Rice Terrace Conservation Activities" that was concluded between NTT West Saga Branch and Nakanotsuru Residents' Association on July 10, 2017.
A total of about 70 employees and family members of Saga Group and 15 from Nakanotsuru Residents' Association took part in the activity.

The ground was a little muddy due to the rain on the previous day. It was drizzling on the very day, but a decision was made to carry on with the activity, which kicked off with a commemorative tree-planting event before weeding work started.

Each participant group was assigned to a different area to engage in weeding work on the slope using grass cutters, work to remove vines that have grown and coiled around the wire fence using sickles, and conducted checks while moving along the wire fence route. Meanwhile, those with family members took part in a hands-on experience to dig up sweet potatoes.

After work was completed, food including steamed sweet potatoes, shishi-jiru (wild boar miso soup) and rice balls made from new rice harvested from the rice terrace were offered by the local residents at the community center, where participants deepened their interaction while enjoying the delicious meal.
At the same time, sale of freshly-harvested local vegetables and other local specialties also attracted a lot of people.

A member of the Nakanotsuru Residents' Association expressed their deep appreciation for participation by many members of NTT West Saga Group in the rice terrace conservation activity as with the previous event, and that they are glad to see the surrounding environment of the rice terrace being protected and becoming more beautiful and richly endowed, thanks to the effort of the participants.

NTT West Saga Group will continue to engage earnestly in efforts to protect the environment while coordinating and cooperating with the local government bodies.
