Midori Ippai Project Activities Protecting the Beautiful White Sand, Green Pines and Scallion Fields through the "Tottori Forest of Symbiosis" Forest Conservation Activity
NTT West Tottori Group takes part in the "Tottori Forest of Symbiosis" forest conservation activity as part of the "Midori Ippai Project," a biodiversity conservation initiative.
This activity kicked off in October 2018 with the conclusion of an agreement on forest conservation and management with Tottori Prefecture and Tottori City by leasing a piece of land with an area of approximately 1.06 ha near the entrance to Oasis Tottori Sand Dunes Oasis Plaza in Tottori City, Fukubecho, Yuyama, followed by planting of about 200 resistant black pine trees in November 2018. Subsequently, weeding of undergrowth has been conducted about twice a year as part of the nurturing efforts to conserve the forest. This activity was initiated to restore the pine forest along the coast with beautiful white sand and green pines following the loss of the designated pine forest in San'in Kaigan Geopark due to damages caused by weevils in recent years, while at the same time to prevent sand from being blown to the Japanese leek fields, which are the specialty of Tottori Prefecture.
In FY2019, we conducted two rounds of activities, one in spring and one in autumn. The first activity held on June 2, 2019 (Sunday) was participated by a total of 80 people, including 71 employees, family members and retired employees of NTT West Tottori Group and nine from Tottori Prefecture, Tottori City and Tottori East Forest Owners' Cooperative. The second event was held on December 14, 2019 (Saturday), where a total of 76 participants, including 67 employees, family members and retired employees of NTT West Tottori Group and nine from Tottori Prefecture, Tottori City and Tottori East Forest Owners' Cooperative worked up a good sweat to weed the undergrowth around resistant black pines that were planted earlier despite the chilly weather and overcast sky.
NTT West Tottori Group will continue to work together with the local community on efforts to protect the white sand and green pines at the pine grove as well as the Japanese leek fields, which are the specialty of Tottori Prefecture.
