Building a Society of Symbiosis with the Environment

In the wake of the Paris Agreement, CO2 reduction has become a major trend for the international society. Meanwhile, the utility value of renewable energy is also growing among the private sector and local governments from the perspectives of RE100, SBT as well as ESG, which results in an accelerated pace to shift from fuel vehicles with high CO2 emission to electric vehicles (henceforth "EV"). In response to this transition, NTT Group has also joined the EV100 initiative and declared that it will switch to 100% EV for all the general vehicles it owns by 2030.

Under this trial, mutual power supply between office buildings and vehicles through V2B is optimally controlled using IoT and AI in addition to the photovoltaic system to verify the effectiveness of energy cost and CO2 reduction efforts. Also, a smart cloud function has been developed for remote control of EV, and verification will be conducted in future on the utilization of stationary batteries. As part of this series of measures, NTT Smile Energy of NTT West Group is currently collaborating with Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. on a trial to reduce energy cost and CO2 in office buildings from December 2018 to March 31, 2020 through V2B (vehicle-to-building; a collective term for the technology and system for mutual supply of power between automobiles and buildings) that makes use of EV.

Going forward, we will implement our plans while at the same time exchange views with local government and private sector bodies who are promoting environment management and review the details of the verification process accordingly.

[Place of Verification]
NTT West Yamaguchi Branch (Yamaguchi Prefecture, Yamaguchi City, Kumanocho 4-5)

[Verification Environment]
3 V2B systems, 3 EV (Nissan Leaf), 16.5kW photovoltaic system

[Method of Verification]
To verify how energy cost and CO2 can be reduced without compromising the convenience that EV users enjoy by remotely controlling the EV and stationary batteries from the cloud (charging and discharging) according to the amount of power generated and used as well as usage of EV while generating electric power using the photovoltaic system for in-house consumption by the office buildings. Meanwhile, for the verification of energy services such as energy cost reduction and demand response, the effects will be measured and analyzed in cooperation with ENNET Corporation, an electricity retailer.
