Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 326Participation in "Satoyama (Village Forest) Development at Kozono-yama Oyama-yama Green Belt" March 2, 2019 NTT West Kumamoto Group

On March 2, 2019 (Saturday), NTT West Kumamoto Group took part in the satoyama (village forest) development work at the Kozono-yama Oyama-yama green belt located in Higashi-ku of Kumamoto City.

The activity was carried out jointly by a total of about 45 participants who are members of Kumamoto Group, NPO Earth Greenery Activities Japan (EGAJ) as well as those from the local community association.

This objective of the activity is to develop a village forest at a part of the green belt to minimize "bamboo invasion" into the surrounding vegetation as a result of the rapid proliferation of moso bamboos, which block off sunlight, suck up nutrients from the soil and result in the withering of trees.

Earth Greenery Activities Japan (EGAJ) was commissioned by Kumamoto City to implement this initiative, and this is the fifth time Kumamoto Group is taking part in the activity.

In the opening address, Mr. Mitsui, Manager of General Affairs Department, expressed gratitude to the participants for their support on a non-working day and urged everyone to take thorough precautions to prevent injury and avoid heatstroke under the hot weather by taking plenty of water.

This was followed by a briefing to the participants on the details of the activity and the necessary instructions, who then engaged in tasks including bamboo cutting, moving and loading them onto the truck, mowing inside the green belt as well as weeding of the flowerbeds.

After work was completed, participants wiped off sweat from their hard work while enjoying their lunchbox meal.

NTT West Kumamoto Group will continue its contribution to protect the global environment by engaging in this satoyama development initiative together with the local community.
