As part of the Midori Ippai Project efforts, NTT West Tokushima Group took part in the "13th Tokushima Downtown Flower Road Project Flower Planting Event" on September 22, 2018. This event was organized by the NPO "Shinmachi-gawa wo Mamoru Kai (Association to Preserve Shinmachi River)."

Launched in November 2014 and held three times a year (May, September and December), this is an activity to plant flowers at the planting zones and flowerbeds along the roads in the downtown area of the city with the hope of offering a pleasant experience to visitors to and residents of the city.

The event was held on a weekend, but nonetheless a total of more than 250 people, including 58 from NTT West Tokushima Group as well as volunteer groups formed by NPOs, local neighborhood associations, co-sponsors, university students and residents from the neighboring districts of Tokushima City, took part in the activity.

After everyone gathered at Aibahama Park at 8 a.m., the opening ceremony kicked off with greeting from the Mayor of Tokushima City, who talked about activities to raise and spread awareness toward enhancing the urban and river environment and promoting a green city. This was followed by a speech from Mr. Nakamura, Chairman of Shinmachi-gawa wo Mamoru Kai, who said that the objective is to transform Tokushima City into a city of flowers through the planting activities of the participants. He also expressed the hope to involve as many residents as possible in this effort.

At the end of the opening ceremony, the participants were divided into seven groups, and each group moved to the flowerbeds and planting zones at one of the designated locations, which extended from the front of Tokushima Station to Awaodori Kaikan, and from the front of Awagin Hall to the City Government Office. They then engaged in the planting of 27,000 marigolds (orange, yellow and mixed colors).

Participants from NTT West Tokushima Group were split into two groups to engage in planting work at the "10 flowerbeds located along the entire Motomachi road divider," "planting zone on the Shinmachibashi road divider," as well as the flowerbeds inside Aibahama Park.

All the activities for the day ended with a commemorative photo-taking session for all the Tokushima Group participants at Aibahama Park.

Before the event came to a close, participants who have engaged in the planting work since morning were treated to a heartwarming bowl of hot udon noodles at the Hyotan Island Cruise Terminal at Ryokokubashi that is operated by Shinmachi-gawa wo Mamoru Kai.

NTT West Tokushima Group will continue to engage in this activity to help raise the awareness toward the importance of greenery and create more opportunities for cultivating a sense of attachment for the flowers and greenery in the city.
