On November 17, 2018 (Saturday), NTT West Tottori Group took part in the "Tottori Forest of Symbiosis" forest conservation activity at Tottori City, Fukubecho, Yuyama.

Started in 2006, the "Tottori Forest of Symbiosis" initiative is a system by Tottori Prefecture and the municipalities to support forest conservation activities by the private sector. Under this system, Tottori Group engaged in forest conservation activities for five years at Yazu-cho since 2013, and this year marks the end of the five-year agreement. A new agreement has been concluded on October 9, 2018, and this is the first round of activity after the signing ceremony to carry out forest conservation activities at Fukubecho.

Despite the drizzly and chilly weather, a total of 94 participants, including employees and family members of Tottori Group, members of "Tottori Morinyo" - a popular forestry girls network, and representatives of the prefecture, city and forest owners' cooperative, took part in the event.

Under the guidance of members from the Tottori East Forest Owners' Cooperative, 200 resistant black pine saplings produced in Tottori Prefecture were planted. Black pine is a tough tree that is resistant against weevil damage, thus planting them helps to restore the pine grove that protects the Japanese leek fields from sand that is blown from the coast of the sand dunes.

It was the first time for some of the employees to carry a hoe, but nonetheless they managed to plant the saplings after struggling with the digging work. We look forward to the growth of these saplings that were painstakingly planted by the employees and their family members.

We will carry out undergrowth weeding work twice a year (for five years) to ensure that the black pine saplings that were planted would thrive.

NTT West Tottori Group will continue to take part in this activity to contribute to environmental protection of the local region.
