Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 302Forest Volunteer Activity (Developing Satoyama (Village Forest) in Toyohashi) October 6, 2018 NTT West Tokai Group

On October 6, 2018 (Saturday), a total of 30 participants including employees, family members and retired employees of NTT West Tokai Group held a forest volunteer activity at Aichi Prefecture, Toyohashi City, Oiwa-cho.

Scheduled on the first Saturday of October every year, weather conditions had been unstable in the past three years and it was uncertain whether the event could be held. This year, it was drizzling since the morning of the event, and participants showed up in their raincoats.

After the activity started, participants walked to the site of the activity - NTT Docomo Iwaya Radio Relay Station. Upon arriving at the destination, an opening address was given by the representative of Tokao Group. This was followed by a briefing by Mr. Morita, Chairman of the "Honokuni Morizukuri no Kai" (NPO), who explained the importance of satoyama (village forest) development and the work involved. Participants then put on a safety helmet and wore a saw at the waist before they got to work.

Tree cutting for this round of activity was performed on a 50-meter surface on the mountain side along the Futagawa Nature Trail.

This place was densely covered with thick trees and think bamboo grass. Thanks to the kind support by the secretariat, the trees to be cut down were marked using a pink ribbon and those to be retained with a blue ribbon. This allowed participants to perform their work smoothly.

At the end of the activity, which lasted for about two hours including breaks in between, light began to penetrate and brighten the forest, which was previously dark due to the densely-grown plants.

Work was carried out on unstable ground, but as with past years, the activity ended with no injury. A group photo was taken at the end of the event.

Thanks to the support by the participants, condition of the forest is gradually improving each year. NTT West Tokai Group will continue to engage in activities to protect the global environment against global warming.
