On August 5, 2018 (Sunday), a total of 6,000 participants from 117 groups gathered to take part in the FY2018 "2nd Nagara River Beautification Campaign", including 98 participants who are employees, family members and retired employees of NTT West Gifu Group.

Organized by the "Nagara River Beautification Campaign Committee,", this is a cleanup activity that is held three times a year as part of the effort to put into action the "I Love Gifu" slogan proposed by Gifu Shimbun and Gifu Broadcasting System.

A major fireworks festival was held at the riverfront of Nagara River the night before the activity, and large quantities of litter were left scattered, including ground sheets used by the spectators, leftover food and packaging of lunchboxes, and ashes of rocket fireworks. The amount of trash seemed to have increased compared to past years.

Started at 6 a.m., participants worked up a good sweat while engaging in the cleaning activity. Also, large stones were moved by the spectators from the riverside to anchor the ground sheets to the concrete floor of the levee, and returning the stones to the riverside heavy involved heavy-lifting work.

Renowned as one of the three clearest rivers in Japan, water at the middle reach of Nagara River has also been selected as one of the hundred most exquisite waters of Japan. The river is also a famous site for the traditional cormorant fishing (ukai) activity.
As with the ukai event, a large number of spectators also gather from different parts of Japan to watch the "Nagara River National Fireworks Festival," a popular yearly feature in summer.

NTT West Gifu Group will continue to engage actively in such cleanup activities in order to maintain a beautiful Nagara River and a natural environment for the large number of living things that inhabit the area, and for the benefits brought about by the clear river to be enjoyed by as many animals, plants and people as possible.
