On June 10, 2018 (Sunday), NTT West Shimane Group took part in the "Mass Cleaning of Nakaumi and Lake Shinji" event, which was organized jointly by Matsue City and Lake Shinji Water Quality Improvement Council.

This cleaning activity is held on a yearly basis on the second Sunday of June in the areas surrounding the two lakes, Lake Shinji and Nakaumi. The former is located on the east side of Shimane Prefecture while the latter extends across the prefectural border of Shimane and Tottori. It is organized jointly by Shimane Prefecture and Tottori Prefecture after the lakes were registered under the Ramsar Convention on November 8, 2005.

The Ramsar Convention is a treaty on wetlands that was adopted at an international conference held on February 2, 1971 in the city of Ramsar in Iran. It calls for wide-scale conservation and restoration of wetlands by viewing wetlands of international importance and the animals and plants that inhabit or grow in these sites as part of the ecosystem that supports human lives.

At the opening speech, Mr. Matsuura, Mayor of Matsue City as well as Chairman of Lake Shinji Water Quality Improvement Council, thanked the participants for taking part in the activity. He also highlighted the importance of conserving the rich natural environment as well as maintaining a symbiotic relationship in the areas around Nakaumi and Lake Shinji.

Among the total number of 7,050 participants who took part in this event, 72 were representatives of Shimane Group including current employees.

It was drizzling before the activity, but rain stopped when cleaning started. Participants gathered plastic items, waterweeds and driftwood that were washed ashore along Lake Shinji, and picked up litter such as empty plastic bottles and cans in the nearby parks and by the side of the roads. More than 12 tons of litter was collected in total at the end of the activity, which helped to restore the beauty along the shores of Nakaumi and Lake Shinji.

NTT West Shimane Group will continue to engage actively in activities that contribute to the society as well as conservation of the local environment.
