On May 26, 2018 (Saturday), NTT West Wakayama Group held a tree thinning activity at the "Brilliant Forest" located in Ryujin-mura of Tanabe City as part of the forest conservation efforts under the "corporate forest" project promoted by Wakayama Prefecture.
Wakayama Prefecture introduced the "corporate forest" initiative since 2002. It is a collective term for projects to achieve forest conservation within the prefecture as part of the social and environmental contribution activities by organizations such as corporations and labor unions, as well as activities to interact with the local communities.
Wakayama Group concluded a 10-year agreement on forest conservation and management with Wakayama Prefecture and Tanabe City in February 2008, and started activities under the name of "Brilliant Forest" since April of the same year.
Marking the 10th anniversary of the endeavor in February this year, a decision has been reached to continue with the activities by extending the duration for another 10 years.
On the day of the event, a total of 70 participants who are employees, family members and retired employees of Wakayama Group took part in the tree thinning activity. They worked up a good sweat to maintain the forest as they struggled with the use of saws which they are not used to on a steep slope.
Also, it was the first time to hold a hands-on woodwork class for kindergarten and elementary school children participants.
The class included log cutting game as well as making of T-shaped wooden flying toys and pen holders. It was a valuable and enjoyable experience for the children to understand about the importance of forests through their contact with wood.
NTT West Wakayama Group will continue to engage in efforts to protect the global environment through the "Brilliant Forest" conservation activities.
