On May 26, 2018 (Saturday), the "2018 Spring Fujimae Higata Cleaning Mission" was held to clean up the area around Fujimae Higata (tidal flat) at the mouth of Shonai River and Shinkawa River (Nagoya City, Minato-ku). The event was participated by a total of 125 employees, family members and retired employees of NTT West Tokai Group.

Organized by the Fujimae Higata Cleaning Mission Executive Committee, this cleaning activity is held twice a year in spring and autumn.

Under the cloudy sky on the day of the event, participants gathered at the center levee of river bank between Shonai River and Shinkawa River. They were split into three groups and walked to the respective cleaning areas.

Upon arriving at the river bank, various kinds of litter including plastic bottles and empty cans were found scattered across the area. Garbage that drifted down from the upstream when the river level rose during the past typhoons was blocked by the reeds and built up.

After a briefing by the secretariat, work started with participants divided into a group who moved down to the river bank along the rope in long boots, plastic gloves and hat, and another team who was in charge of sorting the collected trash at the levee.

Some of them also had to plow through reeds that were taller than them to pick up garbage that was scattered inside. Thanks to their hard work, all of the trash bags were filled up in no time.

After work completed in about an hour's time, the surrounding area looked amazingly clean, and this marked the end of the half-day joint cleaning activity by the participants.

According to the secretariat, the quantity of bulky trash has decreased compared to the past. The overall quantity of trash has also been declining yearly, perhaps due to the stronger environmental awareness in recent years.

In the afternoon, participants took part in an optional "bird-watching session" at Fujimae Higata as well as a new initiative on "reed bed restoration and reed planting" to learn about biodiversity.

NTT West Tokai Group will continue its effort to conserve biodiversity and maintain the environment through such activities for future generations.
