Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 278Participation in "Lake Hamana Cleaning Mission" June 3, 2018 NTT West Shizuoka Group

On June 3, 2018 (Sunday), the "Lake Hamana Cleaning Mission" was held at Lake Hamana (Hamamatsu City and Kosai City) located on the west side of Shizuoka Prefecture.

Lake Hamana is a brackish lake with a mixture of sea water and fresh water. It is known as a habitat for diverse species of fish, shellfish and mollusks and is also suited for aquaculture.
Besides swimming, the beaches around Lake Hamana are also popular for marine sports such as boats, yachts, sea kayaking and windsurfing.

The Lake Hamana Cleaning Mission originated from a voluntary cleaning activity by the public and community groups with the hope to preserve the beautiful Lake Hamana. Ever since 1979, the activity has been held on the first Sunday of every June by the organizer, "Hamanako no Mizu wo Kirei ni suru Kai (Committee for Keeping the Water of Lake Hamana Clean)," which comprises members of local government bodies and community groups who engage in efforts to maintain the water quality and beauty around Lake Hamana.
Marking the 40th round of the activity, significant achievements have been made in recent years with as much as 50 tons of garbage being collected.

Blessed with fine weather on this summery day, temperature started rising since morning.
A total of 100 volunteers, including employees, family members and retired employees of NTT West Shizuoka Group, gathered at Kanzanji Sun Beach located in Nishi-ku of Hamamatsu City.

Combustible wastes, non-combustible wastes, as well as natural wastes (sea algae, wood debris, etc.) that were washed ashore were sorted accordingly during the cleaning activity. Natural wastes that were collected were particularly heavy as they contained a large amount of water, and it was a challenging task to transport them from one end of the beach to the other. There was concern at first that some participants might suffer from heatstroke, but nonetheless the cleaning activity ended smoothly, thanks to the cooperation of the participants.
Kanzanji Sun Beach became amazingly clean again after the activity, and is now ready again to welcome visitors during the beach season this year.

NTT West Shizuoka Group will continue to engage actively in the "Lake Hamana Cleaning Mission" and other cleaning and beautification activities in order to preserve and hand down to future generations the abundant nature of the beautiful Lake Hamana, which is a popular lake among the local residents as well as a large number of visitors.

Total of 3,770 participants from 93 groups at 19 sites in Nishi-ku, Hamamatsu City
[Amount of trash collected]
Combustible wastes: 4.12 tons
Non-combustible wastes: 8.32 tons

Natural wastes collected will be further sorted into sea algae, wood debris, etc., which will be dried and used as fertilizers.
