- Promotion of Midori Ippai Project

NTT West sees harmony with the natural environment as an important responsibility of mankind. For this reason, we have been promoting the "Midori Ippai Project" as a measure to protect the rich global environment through environmental and biodiversity conservation activities by every employee.

窶 Conservation of Biodiversity through Forest Conservation Activities (NTT Hikari no Mori)

On November 11, 2008, NTT West Kochi Group signed a Cooperative Forestation Partnership Agreement with Kochi Prefecture, Kochi City and Kochi Forest Owners' Cooperative. Since the launch of the activity, NTT West Group employees in the Kochi area came together to engage in this initiative with about 50 members taking part yearly in forest conservation activities such as tree thinning. To date, a total of 776 members have participated in this initiative.

On November 17, 2018, a total of 47 members, including employees of Kochi Group and their family members as well as retired employees, took part in the tree thinning work at NTT Hikari no Mori. As before, participants were divided into two groups to take part in the hands-on thinning experience session and woodwork class respectively. The site for tree thinning was a slightly steep slope. Under the guidance of members from the Kochi Forest Owners' Cooperative, both adult and child participants united their effort to cut down four cedar trees that are 30cm in diameter using a saw. Meanwhile, at the woodwork class, adults challenged making mobile phone stands while children tried to make chairs. Chair-making took up a long time as it was unexpectedly tough, but the children sat happily on the chairs that they made themselves. Also, a memorable event that marked the 10th anniversary of our participation in the initiative took place on January 24, 2019 - we received a certificate of appreciation from the Governor of Kochi Prefecture for our continued support in the forestation project at NTT Hikari no Mori.

In addition, Kochi Group also took part in the replanting activity for the Obiyamachi Symbol Road flowerbeds on November 14. This was the 27th round of our participation in the same activity. A total of 30 NTT West Group employees as well as retired employees from Kochi area took part in the event to replant 880 pansies and violas, which are beautiful flowers that thrive in the cold winter.

NTT West Kochi Group will continue to devote efforts to conserve biodiversity through these activities.

In 2008, NTT West Kochi Group signed a Cooperative Forestation Partnership Agreement with Kochi Prefecture and other parties, and have since been taking part in forest conservation activities with about 50 participants each year. As a member of an environmentally-advanced company, we have been engaging in initiatives to regenerate forests that are not properly maintained with the main aims of "reforestation" and "promoting communication."

This is an initiative that we have implemented since many years ago, and we have also encountered many challenges along the way. For example, it was very tough trying to get as many people as possible to participate and also to coordinate the schedule so that both our employees and their family members can join in the activity. Also, we paid particular attention to ensuring safety (such as providing safety guidance before performing work) since it is also participated by many children.

Since we have been performing tree thinning work yearly for more than 10 years, we are running out of flat areas where work can be performed more easily, and it is getting harder to find locations for participants to carry out the activity. That being said, we believe this activity contributes significantly to the promotion of NTT West Group's CSR initiatives, and will continue to devote our effort in future.

Above all, what we have gained from this activity is that it allows a sense of awareness toward environmental protection to be developed among the employees. It seems like the tree thinning experience has provided a valuable opportunity for our employees to become strongly aware of the importance of forest conservation as well as the need for such efforts. Also, participation in the event has helped to foster a sense of unity among the fellow employees. We believe it has helped to promote communication not only within our company but also between people from the forest industry of Kochi Prefecture and employees of NTT West Group.
