Main Recent Activities Support for the 5th Afuhi Summit

On November 10, NTT West provided a videoconferencing system as part of its support to the 5th "Afuhi Summit" held at Kamigamo Shrine in Kyoto City Kita-ku.

The "Afuhi Summit" is an event hosted by the AFUHI Project (NPO) to provide education on culture and environmental conservation through activities such as growing of hollyhocks used for the Aoi Festival, one of the three big festivals of Kyoto. It provides an opportunity for students from regions that are associated with hollyhocks to share with one another what they have learned about hollyhock growing as well as the nature and history of the region.

At the current summit, elementary school students from Kyoto, Shizuoka and Fukui were connected via the "Hikari Share Place" videoconferencing system, a service provided by NTT West. The event included presentation by each school starting from Kyoto City Shichiku Elementary School, as well as feedback and lectures.

In the opening address, Mr. Ono, Kyoto Branch Manager, conveyed that NTT West is also supporting the reproduction of hollyhocks with NTT West Group's employees playing the role of foster parents for the plants as part of the "Midori Ippai" activity. He also stressed the significance of this initiative in helping to protect the environment from the stance of SDGs.

Ms. Murakami, Deputy Mayor of Kyoto City, together with other guests, attended this year's Afuhi Summit, where the elementary school students gave presentations on what they have learned, which also included the characteristics of the individual regions. Warm comments were given by Mr. Morimoto, Chairman of the Kyoto City Greenery Association in response to the presentations, which helped students to deepen their understanding, appreciate the importance of nature and culture and get a hands-on feel on the importance of handing down such knowledge to future generations.

The summit was also featured on the Kyoto Shimbun and Shizuoka Shimbun newspapers.
