On January 28, 2018 (Sunday), the "Otsu City Lake Biwa Reed Cutting Activity" was held by Otsu City at Otsu City, Ogoto. A total of 22 participants, including employees and family members of NTT West Shiga Group, took part in the activity.
Reeds that grow in colonies form an essential location for wild birds and fish to lay eggs as well as for their growth, while cutting reeds that have gown from absorbing nitrogen and phosphorous in the water helps to purify the water quality.
The "Otsu City Lake Biwa Reed Cutting Activity" is held with the aim to maintain the reed colonies by cutting them in winter to promote growth of the sprouts, which will in turn help to purify the water of Lake Biwa and maintain the ecosystem.
The area was hit by a cold wave on the day of the event, so participants had to perform work in the harsh coldness. Despite getting muddy as they had to step into the mud, all of them united their effort to carry out the series of tasks to cut the reeds with a sickle and tie them into a bundle using a rope.
The reeds that are harvested at this activity will be made into "yoshi taimatsu" (reed torches).
These reed torches will be lit with fire concurrently at five different areas by the lake in Otsu City on the night of "Biwako Biraki" (start of sightseeing season at Lake Biwa) which is held every March to call for environmental conservation as well as to show appreciation for the blessings of water.
