LINE 265 FY2017 2nd "Adopt Program Yoshino River" River Cleanup and Beautification Activity and "NTT West Clean Environment Mission"

On November 11, 2017 (Saturday), NTT West Tokushima Group held the "Adopt Program Yoshino River" activity to clean up the riverbed of Yoshino River.

This Adopt Program is a project that divides the riverbed of Yoshino River into segments, and participants (groups, companies, etc.) are invited to "adopt" a riverbed segment and become its "foster parent." These "foster parents" would carry out cleanup and beautification activities periodically (at least three times a year) at the assigned riverbed segment, which is their "foster child."
Tokushima Group is in charge of cleaning a 600m segment of riverbed and levee on the left bank that is 1,400m to 2,000m upstream from the mouth of Yoshino River.

The event was originally scheduled on October 21 (Saturday), but was put off to October 28 (Saturday) due to typhoon no. 21. However, the venue was again affected by typhoon no. 22 on October 28, and the event was finally held on November 11 (Saturday).

Though postponed to three weeks later, as the October river cleanup activity is always held in conjunction with the "NTT West Clean Environment Mission," a total of about 74 participants, including employees and family members of Tokushima Group as well as retired employees, gathered at 8 a.m. despite falling on a non-working day to take part in the cleanup activity, which lasted for about an hour.

Due to the two recent typhoons that hit the area and the fact that the area to clean up is near the mouth of Yoshino River, large quantities of litter and illegally disposed household waste were washed shore. Trash collected included combustible garbage, non-combustible garbage (including recyclable wastes), trash that requires disposal as industrial waste such as hard rubber hoses, iron sheets, plastic tanks, plastic buckets, driftwood, polystyrene foam boxes, plastic container and laundry poles. Industrial waste collector was contacted to handle the bulky trash that could not be handled by the participants.

At the end of the activity, Mr. Fujimoto, Manager of NTT West Tokushima Branch General Affairs Department as well as the secretariat representative, expressed that the activity to clean up Yoshino River is carried out every October under the "NTT West Clean Environment Mission" as part of the group's social action program. He added that the third Yoshino River cleaning activity will be scheduled before the "Tokushima Marathon 2018" on March 25, 2018, and looked forward to seeing a huge turnout again. He also thanked the participants for their support.

The activity ended with a group photo-taking session with the beautified Yoshino River as the backdrop, and we believe every participant felt good on this day too.
