Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 263Forest Protection Activity in "Hikari no Mori (Bright Forest)" November 7, 2017 NTT West Mie Group

On November 7, 2017 (Tuesday), NTT West Mie Group held a forest protection activity in "Hikari no Mori (Bright Forest)" located at the foot of Aoyama Highland in the Muro-Akame-Aoyama Quasi-National Park in Mie Prefecture.

Mie Group has been carrying out activities such as tree-thinning in "Hikari no Mori" ever since it signed the "5-year Plan Agreement to Maintain the City-owned Forest at the Foot of Aoyama Highland" in 2011 with Mie Prefecture.

Marking the 10th round of the activity, participants were blessed with a warm and fine weather even though it was November, and a total of 34 participants, including employees and retirees of Mie Group, took part in the thinning work as well as woodworking class.

At the thinning activity, participants of each group worked together to pull down Japanese cypress trees by cutting a slit using a handsaw and tying a rope around the tree. Sometimes the trees did not fall down completely as they were caught between other trees, but nonetheless everyone united their efforts to perform the tasks with support from members of the Forest Owners' Cooperative.
The stump of the Japanese cypress trees that were cut down gave off a pleasant scent, and the trees that were cut down during the thinning activities were sliced into thin pieces by member of the Forest Owners' Cooperative for participants to bring home as a souvenir.

At the woodworking class, besides materials for making one's own chopsticks as with previous classes, woodworking kits for making items such as chairs and book shelves were also provided, Thanks to the wider variety of items that can be made, the response was extremely good and participants engaged enthusiastically in making their craftwork.

NTT West Mie Group will continue to engage actively in such forest protection activities.
