Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 259Participation in the Ishikawa Forestation Project October 28 and November 3, 2017 NTT West Hokuriku Group

NTT West Hokuriku Group took part in the "Ishikawa Forestation Project" that was held on two days, October 28 (Saturday) and November 3, 2017 (Friday). The organizer of this project is Ishikawa Reforestation Promotion Association.

Under the project, forest conservation activities are carried out at three locations (Kaga, Kanazawa and Noto) to protect and hand down the beautiful nature through participation and support by corporations and groups. The main activities include maintenance works such as tree planting, undergrowth weeding and vine cutting at the forests in these areas, on-site learning by making use of the forest resources such as fungal inoculation. It offers an opportunity for creating awareness and discovering new facts by the participants through their encounter with a wide variety of insects, birds and plants in the bountiful forest.

At the Yuhidera Temple area in Kanazawa City, participants received guidance from the organizer and were divided into groups to engage in tree-raising activities such as undergrowth weeding and vine cutting at the forested site handled by NTT West while making good use of handy sickles and bush cutters.
Thanks to the devoted effort of the participants to remove weeds that grew to the height of an adult and vines that wrapped around the trees, maintenance works on the environment for growing the planted trees were completed about an hour's time.

Meanwhile, at the Hiuchidani area located in Shikamachi of Hakui-gun, an on-site learning event using the forest resources was conducted for participants to enjoy the "forestation" process. Participants dug holes according to the size of the seedlings under the guidance of the organizer, and planted 120 sawtooth oak seedlings. They also had the chance to experience harvesting and inoculation of nameko mushrooms as well as planting of Japanese staunton vine, shiroitoso (Chionographis japonica) and hepatica.

Grown in the mountain where there is fresh air, the inoculated logs were filled with nameko mushrooms of different sizes unlike what we see at supermarkets. Children who saw the mushrooms shouted "amazing! That's a lot of mushrooms" and "this is fun!" with excitement. All the participants enjoyed the harvesting process.
As always, the session ended with mettajiru (miso soup with pork and vegetables) offered to the participants, who enjoyed the soup after their hard work to complete the activities successfully.

NTT West Hokuriku Group will continue to engage in efforts to cultivate forests and hand them down to future generations.
