LINE 257 Participation in the 15th Abe River Driftwood Cleanup Festival

Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 257Participation in the 15th Abe River Driftwood Cleanup Festival November 19, 2017 NTT West Shizuoka Group

On November 19, 2017 (Sunday), the "15th Abe River Driftwood Cleanup Festival" was held at Abekawa Shinsui Recreation Square in Aoi-ku of Shizuoka City. A total of 109 employees, family members and retirees of NTT West Shizuoka Group took part in this activity.

Abe River (51km in length) is a Class A river that flows from Mt. Oyarei with a height of about 2,000m into Suruga Bay. It is a torrential river due to the huge difference in height. For this reason, the water level rises when there is typhoon or heavy rainfall, which brings along with it large quantities of driftwood to the riverbed, river mouth and even the seashore.
Not only does the driftwood spoil the scenery of the river and hinder waterfront utilization, its impact is much more wide-ranging, which also includes devastation of mountain forests and damage on the fishery industry.

Hosted by the executive committee that includes members from the Shizuoka River Office under the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism as well as Shizuoka City Government, the "Abe River Driftwood Cleanup Festival" is an activity that aims at deepening public interest toward the mountain, river and sea by cleaning up driftwood and trash in the river and enjoying the scenery of the clean riverbed after the activity.

Held yearly during this period after the typhoon season, a total of approximately 1,200 members of corporations and groups took part in the festival this year. Due to the two typhoons that hit the area in October, huge quantities of driftwood and trash were washed ashore. All the participants united their effort to clean up the riverbed by moving the trash to the collection point.

NTT West Shizuoka Group will continue to engage enthusiastically in efforts such as this event to protect the global environment with the mission to protect and hand down the beautiful and bountiful nature to future generations.
