On October 14, 2017 (Saturday), NTT West Yamaguchi Group held a volunteer activity to maintain the bamboo forest in Yamaguchi Daijingu shrine of Yamaguchi City.

Although there were some years in between when the event had to be canceled, this year marks the 10th year anniversary, which is a milestone for this bamboo forest volunteer activity.

Yamaguchi Daijingu shrine was built by dividing and transferring the enshrined deities from Ise Grand Shrine. In the old days, Yamaguchi Daijingu prospered as a shrine that people in the west of Japan could visit as they were unable to travel all the way to Ise. For this reason, it has been commonly referred to by the people as "nishi no Oisesama" (Ise Grand Shrine of the West) since early times. The shrine is surrounded by greenery with a peaceful atmosphere.

It was uncertain at first whether the event could be held due to poor weather, but luckily the weather held out and a total of 51 participants, including 21 members from Yamaguchi Prefecture Agriculture and Forestry Office and the "Bamboo Forest Volunteer Yamaguchi" group, as well as 30 current and retired employees of NTT Yamaguchi Group, took part in the activity.

As the forest maintenance work had to be carried out on a slope and involved the risk of injuries, the chief priest of Yamaguchi Daijingu shrine held a ritual for the participants to pray for their safety.
Under the guidance of representatives from Yamaguchi Prefecture Agriculture and Forestry Office and the "Bamboo Forest Volunteer Yamaguchi" group, works such as bamboo plant cutting and branch removal were performed for about two hours, which helped to clean up the bamboo forest of the shrine and preserve the appearance of the historical architecture.

NTT West Yamaguchi Group will continue to engage in efforts to protect the global environment through forest maintenance activities.
