On September 2, 2017 (Saturday), NTT West Tokai Group took part in the "Hana Ippai Project (making of autumn flowerbeds)" held at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens.

This flowerbed-making activity is organized by Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens three times a year in spring, summer and autumn in cooperation with other corporations and groups to transform the botanical garden into a place that is full of flowers.

Corporations and groups taking part in this activity help to perform work such as transplanting the flower seedlings and weeding at the flower fields and flowerbeds inside the botanical garden as part of the social contribution, environmental conservation and public welfare programs. Schools also participate in this event as part of their flower and environmental education efforts to allow children to feel the importance of life and biodiversity by having them come into contact with flowers and soil through growing and maintenance activities.

It is a popular event within the company, and the turnout from NTT West Tokai Group surpassed that of the previous activity with a record high of 243 participants, which included employees, retired employees and a large number of family members.

Tokai Group prepared 4,600 dahlia and zinnia plants (six species in total), which are autumn flowers, for this planting event. The participants split into three groups and started planting using a shovel with guidance from the botanical garden staff. Although it feels pleasant in the shade during this time of the year when it gets cool at night and in the morning, participants had to work under the blazing sun at areas around the flowerbeds where there was no shade.

Lately, both adults and children have fewer opportunities to touch the soil, and this event allowed young children to enjoy playing with the sand while communicating with their family.

The employees deepened their ties with one another while engaging in the planting work, which was complete by about 11 a.m. with short breaks in between.

After the planting activity, all participants took a commemorative photo with the flowerbeds as the backdrop. Full blossom of the flowers can be expected in late September.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of Higashiyama Botanical Gardens since its opening, and different commemorative events are scheduled. By the time of the autumn festival, colorful blossoms can be expected at the fields and flowerbeds where the flowers were planted this time.

NTT West Tokai Group will continue to engage in this effort in order to let more people feel closer to the colorful flowers, grass and trees around us and develop the passion to nurture them with care.
