On July 8, 2017 (Saturday), NTT West Tokushima Group took part in the "Adopt Program Yoshino River" activity to clean up the riverbed of Yoshino River.
This Adopt Program is a project that divides the riverbed of Yoshino River into segments, and participants (groups, companies, etc.) are invited to "adopt" a riverbed segment and become its "foster parent." These "foster parents" would carry out cleanup and beautification activities periodically (at least three times a year) at the assigned riverbed segment, which is their "foster child."
Despite falling on a non-working day, a total of 82 participants, including employees, family members and retired employees of Tokushima Group, gathered at 8 a.m. to clean up the 600m segment of riverbed and levee on the left bank that is 1,400m to 2,000m upstream from the mouth of Yoshino River. The activity lasted for about an hour.
Large quantities of litter and illegally disposed household wastes are washed shore at the area that Tokushima Group is in charge of, which is near the mouth of Yoshino River. Trash collected was sorted into combustible garbage, non-combustible garbage (including recyclable wastes), trash that requires disposal as industrial waste such as hard rubber hoses, iron sheets, plastic tanks, plastic buckets, driftwood, polystyrene foam boxes, plastic containers and laundry poles. Industrial waste collector was contacted to handle the bulky trash.
In the closing address, Mr. Kawaguchi, Manager of NTT West Tokushima Branch as well as the secretariat representative, expressed that the activity to clean up Yoshino River is carried out every July during the River Conservation Month as part of the group's social action program to contribute to the local community. He added that the second Yoshino River cleaning activity for the year is scheduled in mid October and looked forward to seeing a huge turnout again. He also thanked the participants for their support.
The activity ended with a group photo-taking session with the beautified Yoshino River as the backdrop.
NTT West Tokushima Group will continue to engage actively in the river beautification activities.
