Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 230Participation in "Lake Hamana Cleaning Mission" June 4, 2017 NTT West Shizuoka Group

On June 4, 2017 (Sunday), the "Lake Hamana Cleaning Mission" was held at Lake Hamana (Kosai City and Hamamatsu City) located on the west side of Shizuoka Prefecture.

The Lake Hamana Cleaning Mission originated from a voluntary cleaning activity by the public and community groups with the hope "to make Lake Hamana clean." Ever since 1979, the activity has been held on the first Sunday of every June by the organizer, "Hamanako no Mizu wo Kirei ni suru Kai (Committee for Keeping the Water of Lake Hamana Clean)," which is made up of members of local government bodies and community groups around the lake.

This year marks the 39th round of the activity, which has made significant achievements in collecting as much as 50 tons of garbage in recent years. A total of 99 employees, family members and retired employees of NTT West Shizuoka Group took part in the voluntary cleaning activity at the Kanzanji Sun Beach, which is one of the 19 cleaning sites within Nishi-ku of Hamamatsu City.

Lake Hamana is a brackish lake with a mixture of sea water and fresh water. It is also known as a habitat for diverse species of fish, shellfish and mollusks as well as a place for aquaculture. Besides marine sports such as boats and yachts, the beaches around Lake Hamana are also popular leisure spots where children can play safely because of the gentle waves and shallow water depth.

Although the weather was clear on the day of the event, a large amount of algae was washed ashore due to the strong wind.
Combustible wastes and non-combustible wastes that scattered around the cleaning site and algae that were washed ashore were sorted accordingly. Algae that were collected were heavy as they contained a large amount of water. They will be dried and used as fertilizers.

Thanks to the concerted effort of the participants, the Kanzanji Sun Beach became amazingly clean again after the activity, and is now ready to welcome visitors during the beach season.

The "Lake Hamana Cleaning Mission" is held yearly to protect the abundant nature and beautiful scenery of the lake. NTT West Shizuoka Group will continue to devote its effort to such cleaning activities in order to hand down the abundant nature to future generations.
