On May 20, 2017 (Saturday), NTT West Shizuoka Group took part in the "Rice Planting Festival" held at Ishibu Rice Terrace in Izu, Matsuzaki-cho. This is the third time Shizuoka Group participated in this event.
The event was originally scheduled on May 13 (Saturday), but the date was pushed back to the following week in consideration of the growth of the rice plants due to the prolonged poor weather conditions.
Matsuzaki-cho Ishibu Rice Terrace was selected as one of the "10 Best Rice Terrace Sites, etc. in Shizuoka Prefecture" from the perspectives of national land conservation, rural landscape as well as historical and cultural value. Located at an altitude of 120m to 250m, it is a scenic site that overlooks the Suruga Bay and offers a view of Mount Fuji and the Southern Alps on a clear day.
As Shizuoka Prefecture extends from the east to the west side of Japan, the group departed from Shizuoka City at 7:30a.m., picked up participants at Numazu along the way, and arrived at the destination after a long journey of about four hours.
Under the guidance of the local community on how to pluck the young rice plants and plant them vertically, a total of 45 participants from Shizuoka Group, including 9 children, engaged in the rice-planting activity in four rice terrace segments (approx. 400m2).
Participants almost got carried off their feet at the beginning, but they got the hang of it and learned the knack for planting the rice plants skillfully as time passes.
The participants were covered in mud from the planting activity, but it was an invaluable and memorable experience for both adults and children which they can hardly find in their everyday life.
By participating proactively in and engaging in efforts related to agricultural work through the activities of rice planting in May up till harvesting in October this year, NTT West Shizuoka Group will continue to widely promote the conservation of Ishibu Rice Terrace.
