On April 27, 2017 (Thursday), NTT West Mie Group held a forest protection activity in "Hikari no Mori (Bright Forest)" located at the foot of Aoyama Highland in Mie Prefecture.

"Hikari no Mori" is a city-owned forest located at the foot of the Aoyama Highland in Mie Prefecture. In 2011, NTT West Mie Group signed an agreement with Mie Prefecture to maintain the forest based on a five-year plan starting from 2016 by carrying out activities such as tree thinning to grow the forest.

Both rounds of activities in the summer and autumn of 2016 were canceled due to poor weather, but the sky was clear on the day of the event, which marks the ninth round of the activity and the first after a year and a half with a total of 38 participants who are employees of Mie Group.

The participants watched from a close distance how tree thinning was conducted by members of the Forest Owners' Cooperative, and carried out the activity while being provided with tips on the techniques. As they help to cut down Japanese cypress trees using a handsaw, the cross section gave off a distinct and pleasant scent.

A woodworking class that makes use of timber collected from the thinning activity was also held, where participants engaged enthusiastically in making their own chopsticks and spoons.

Participants also attended a small workshop on Japanese ticks that was conducted by the Forest Owners' Cooperative. Japanese ticks are blood-sucking organisms that are found in mountains and forests. Victims may contract serious infections if bitten by them, so the workshop was a good opportunity for the participants to learn the importance of preventing such infections and the necessary measures to take.

NTT West Mie Group will continue to engage actively in such forest protection activities.
