On June 12, 2016 (Sunday), NTT West Shimane Group took part in the 2016 "Mass Cleaning of Ramsar Convention Sites - Nakaumi and Lake Shinji" event, which was organized jointly by Tottori Prefecture and Shimane Prefecture as part of the effort to conserve the environment around the Nakaumi and Lake Shinji areas.

Nakaumi is the fifth largest lagoon in Japan that is located between the cities of Matsue and Yasugi in Shimane Prefecture as well as the cities of Sakaiminato and Yonago in Tottori Prefecture. Meanwhile, Lake Shinji is famous for its beautiful sunset scenery. Both Nakaumi and Lake Shinji are brackish lakes, a rare type of lake in Japan that is a mixture of both fresh and salt water, and are also renowned for the wide variety of fishes that inhabit the lakes.

The "Mass Cleaning of Nakaumi and Lake Shinji" has been held in areas surrounding the two lakes on a yearly basis on the second Sunday in June jointly by Tottori Prefecture and Shimane Prefecture since 2006, a year after the lakes were registered under the Ramsar Convention on November 8, 2005.

At the opening speech, Mr. Matsuura, Mayor of Matsue City as well as Chairman of Lake Shinji Water Quality Improvement Council, thanked the participants for taking part in the activity, and highlighted the importance of conserving the rich natural environment as well as maintaining a symbiotic relationship in the areas around Nakaumi and Lake Shinji.

It was cloudy on the day of the event. A total of 70 participants including employees of the Shimane Group gathered plastic items, waterweeds and driftwood that were washed ashore along Lake Shinji, and picked up litter such as empty plastic bottles and cans in the nearby park.

NTT West Shimane Group will continue to take part in activities that contribute to the society as well as conservation of the local environment.
