Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 209FY2016 3rd "Adopt Program Yoshino River" River Cleanup, "NTT West Clean Environment Mission" October 15, 2016 NTT West Tokushima Group

On October 15, 2016 (Saturday), NTT West Tokushima Group held the "Adopt Program Yoshino River" activity to clean up the riverbed of Yoshino River.

This Adopt Program is a project that divides the riverbed of Yoshino River into segments, and participants (groups, companies, etc.) are invited to "adopt" each of the riverbed segments.

Participants become the "foster parent" of the riverbed segment they are in charge of, which is their "foster child," and cleanup and beautification activities are carried out periodically (at least three times a year). Tokushima Group is in charge of cleaning and beautifying a 600m segment of riverbed and levee on the left bank that is 1,400m to 2,000m upstream from the mouth of Yoshino River.

This cleanup activity was also held as part of the "NTT West Clean Environment Mission." Despite falling on a non-working day, a total of about 95 participants, including employees and family members of Tokushima Group as well as retired employees and members of Public Telephone Communication (P Com), gathered at 8:00 a.m. to take part in the cleanup activity, which lasted for about an hour.

As the area that Tokushima Group is in charge of is near the mouth of Yoshino River, there were large quantities of litter and illegally disposed household waste that were washed shore. Trash collected included 35 bags of combustible garbage, 50 bags of non-combustible garbage (including recyclable wastes), trash that requires disposal as industrial waste such as hard rubber hoses, iron sheets, plastic tanks, plastic buckets, driftwood, polystyrene foam boxes, plastic container and laundry poles. Industrial waste collector was contacted to handle the bulky trash that could not be handled by NTT.

In the closing address, Mr. Fujimoto, Manager of NTT West Tokushima Branch Planning and General Affairs Department, expressed that the activity to clean up Yoshino River is carried out as part of the group's social action program to contribute to the local community. He added that the cleaning activities would help to reduce dumping of litter and empty cans, thereby preventing garbage from being scattered, and thanked the participants for taking part in the event.
The activity ended with a group photo-taking session with the beautified Yoshino River as the backdrop.

The fourth round of the cleanup activity will be held in early March in conjunction with "Tokushima Marathon 2017," which is scheduled on March 26, 2017 (Sunday).

NTT West Tokushima Group will continue to engage actively in the river protection and beautification activities.
