Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 204Protection of Endangered Species "Japanese Rosy Bitterling" and Restoration of Satoyama (Village Forests) August 28, 2016 NTT West Nara Group

On August 28, 2016 (Sunday), NTT West Nara Group took part in the activities held by the Faculty of Agriculture, Kindai University in the school campus to protect Japanese rosy bitterling, an endangered species, as well as to restore satoyama (village forests) around the pond where the fish inhabits. This was carried out as part of the biodiversity conservation activities which NTT West Nara Group has been providing support to since 2011.

Participants engaged in rice planting at the previous activity on June 12 (Sunday). A total of about 35 participants, including employees and family members of Nara Group and other group companies as well as students of Kindai University, took part in this event where they made scarecrows to be installed at the fields and carried out grass and plant trimming as part of the effort to maintain the environment around the pond where the Japanese rosy bitterling inhabits.

A briefing on the objectives of the activity was given by Associate Professor Kitagawa (Environmental Management Department, Faculty of Agriculture, Kindai University), which was followed by a tour to the mini satoyama aquarium run by the students, where the excited children participants stared into the fish tanks earnestly.

After the aquarium tour, the participants were divided into smaller groups to make scarecrows and carry out trimming of the grass and trees.
Making of scarecrows was carried out mainly by the participating children with support from the university students. Participants brought with them unwanted clothes from their homes, which were used to make into four colorful scarecrows decorated with bright-colored accessories. Upon completion, all the participants helped to carry the scarecrows to the rice field, where they were installed to protect the rice plants from birds and other animals.

The male participants engaged mainly in the trimming of grass and plants in the overgrown areas around the pond using grass cutters and sickles. After focusing on their work quietly, the village forest, which was dark before the activity, brightened up again.

We had a large number of children who participated in this activity as it was held during the summer vacation. We believe this was a memorable summer experience to them, who were engrossed in the activity in a natural environment.

NTT West Nara Group will continue to engage in the "Protection of Endangered Species Japanese Rosy Bitterling and Restoration of Satoyama (Village Forests)" activity in future, and we look forward to the participation of many employees and their family.
