On November 12, 2016 (Saturday), the ""Hana Ippai Project (Making of Spring Flowerbeds)"" was held at the botanical gardens inside Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
Although it was getting colder by the day, the autumn weather was serene on the day of the activity, with a total of about 500 employees from 12 companies and organizations taking part in the third round of the spring flowerbed making event. Many NTT West Tokai Group employees and retirees often participate in the event with their family members, and a total of 155 participants from 32 families took part this time.

The event kicked off with the opening address by the head of the botanical gardens, followed by a briefing by the garden staff on how to plant the seedlings and bulbs into the flowerbeds.
Participants from Tokai Group were divided into three groups, each of which planted typical spring flowers including tulips and pansies.

Planting was completed in about 60 minutes with short breaks in between, and the flowerbeds appeared vibrant with the colorful pansies. After the planting activity, all participants took a commemorative photo. The tulips are expected to bloom next spring, and we look forward to seeing the blossoms.
While some time is needed before the flowers in the flowerbeds start to bloom, we will watch their growth through regular weeding and cleaning activities.

In the afternoon, an optional "forest thinning for forestation of satoyama (village forest)" event was held. This is a new endeavor that we plan to introduce officially in the next fiscal year.

Thinning refers to the work to remove some of the trees in between to prevent the branches and leaves from overlapping one another so that the growth of the trees will not be impeded as a result.

34 participants took part in the first round of the forest thinning event, where they put on safety helmets and carried out thinning works manually with a saw in the "Kabutomushi no Mori (Rhinoceros Beetle Forest)" inside the botanical gardens.
Before the activity, we thought it was just pruning of the small branches, but in actual fact there were huge trees with a branch diameter of more than 20cm. The participants put in great effort into this activity that was more hard-core than expected. While the works involved some danger, they were able to complete the task safely thanks to the guidance of the garden staff and careful attention of the participants.

After the thinning work, sunlight began to reach the roots of the trees in the forest that was previously cramped and dark. With more light penetrating, the forest will transform into a vibrant one that is inhabited by insects and visited by birds.

We plan to incorporate "satoyama (village forest) forestation" as an official activity starting from the next fiscal year.
