Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 202Co-sponsorship of and Participation as Volunteers in FY2016 "Kyushu Forest Day" Tree Planting Ceremony November 19, 2016 NTT West Kagoshima Group

On November 19, 2016 (Saturday), NTT West Kagoshima Group took part in the FY2016 "Kyushu Forest Day" Tree Planting Ceremony that was hosted by Kagoshima Prefecture, Kagoshima Forest Department and Kagoshima Midori no Kikin (Kagoshima Green Foundation).

"Kyushu Forest Day" was established as part of the "Joint Declaration on Forest Creation in Kyushu," which was announced in 2008 by the seven Kyushu prefectures and the Kyushu Regional Forest Office. The tree planting ceremony is held every year in Kagoshima Prefecture as an activity to protect and nurture the rich forests for them to be handed down to future generations.

This year, the ceremony was held at Sakurajima Akamizu-cho in Kagoshima City in conjunction with the 40th anniversary of the Sakurajima District Privately-owned Forest Conservation endeavor. A total of 55 employees and family members from the Kagoshima Group participated in the tree planting activities together with people from the Green Scouts group, forest volunteers group and other companies.

The opening ceremony kicked off with a speech by Mr. Mitazono, Governor of Kagoshima Prefecture, followed by the presentation of donations from each company. Mr. Sueyoshi, Manager of the Kagoshima Branch, also presented the donation on behalf of Kagoshima Group to the governor.

Under the guidance of staff from the Forest Department on how to plant trees and what precautions to take, about 1,000 saplings were planted, including Japanese black pine that is more resistant to pine weevils, as well as Japanese blue oak and Japanese stone oak that bear acorns. Participants carefully planted each sapling with the hope that they would grow up healthily into big trees.

The activity lasted for about one hour, after which a tour to the adjoining Sakurajima District Privately-owned Forest Conservation site was conducted with detailed explanation provided by the relevant personnel. At the location that was off limits to the public, the magnificent view of Sakurajima unfolded before the eyes of the participants, which allowed everyone to feel the importance of the tree planting and forest conservation activities in order to preserve this view.

At the end of the event, the organizer presented participants with saplings of quince, golden lace and fujibakama (eupatorium fortunei). We hope that saplings that were brought back to the participants' homes would grow into large trees that bear luxuriant branches and leaves as well as lots of fruits.

NTT West Kagoshima Group will continue to actively promote environmental conservation activities that are closely tied to the local community, including the maintenance of forests.
