Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 1964th Afuhi Summit November 5, 2016 NTT West Group

Hollyhock is used for the Aoi Festival, which is one of the three major festivals in Kyoto. On November 5 (Saturday), Afuhi Project, an NPO that promotes education on the conservation of culture and environment through activities such as growing of hollyhocks, held the fourth "Afuhi Summit" at Kamigamo Shrine (Kita-ku, Kyoto) in cooperation with NTT West.

The Afuhi Summit provides a good opportunity for students from regions that are associated with hollyhock to learn about the importance of nature and culture and get a hands-on feel of the tradition through presentation of what they have learned about the hollyhock growing and the nature and history of the region to one another.

This year, in addition to elementary and junior high school students from Kyoto, Shizuoka and Fukui who are host parents of the hollyhocks, elementary school students from Tokyo were also connected for the first time via a multipoint videoconferencing system with presentations made by each student representative from Kyoto City Shichiku Elementary School and feedback and lectures were given.
Up to last year, the main activity was presentation by the elementary school students. This year, students from Hamamatsu City Hokusei Junior High School also took part in the summit, where the club representatives delivered a Japanese taiko (drum) performance and others presented on what they have learned about hollyhocks.

Mr. Makino, Mayor of Sabae City, together with other guests, attended this year's Afuhi Summit, which triggered the passion of the elementary and junior high school students during their presentation. Warm comments were given by Mr. Morimoto, Chairman of the Kyoto City Greenery Association in response to the presentations, which helped students to deepen their understanding. It was a meaningful experience for them.

The summit was also featured on the TV news programs by KBS Kyoto, Shizuoka Telecasting and Shizuoka Broadcasting System (SBS) as well as on newspapers including Kyoto Shimbun, Sankei Shimbun, Shizuoka Shimbun and Fukui Shimbun.
