Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 188Tsu City Akogiura Beach Cleaning Activity July 16, 2016 NTT West Mie Group

On July 16, 2016 (Saturday), NTT West Mie Group took part in the voluntary cleaning activity along Akogiura Beach (Mie Prefecture, Tsu City) as part of the "NTT West Midori Ippai Project." This activity was organized by Mie Gyoren (Mie Prefecture Federation of Fishery Cooperative Association).

Ise Bay boasts an abundant biota, and is a popular sightseeing spot as a wide and shallow swimming beach with gentle waves together with the beaches at Niezaki and Gotemba. However, drifting objects that were washed ashore have been a longstanding issue, so the local government bodies organized cleaning activities every July to protect the invaluable biological environment.

This year, a total of about 135 participants, including about 120 employees and family members as well as approximately 15 former employees took part in the activity. There were also a few walk-in participants who were not on the registered list.

The weather forecast for the day was cloudy with a chance of rain, but it turned out to be a perfect day for cleaning with no rain or drastic rise in temperature. Participants started at 7:00 a.m. to pick up litter on the beach such as plastic bottles as well as driftwood that was washed ashore. Trash was collected in bags and piled up.
The beach was clean again after all the garbage was removed. Participants took a commemorative photo with the beach as the backdrop, and they looked lively and radiant, perhaps because of the sense of achievement and fulfilment upon completing the task.

At Akogiura Beach where the activity is held, there has been report that an enriched and enhanced biological environment is gradually being restored with sea turtles visiting to hatch eggs.

Words of appreciation were also received from Mr. Yasuyuki Maeba, Mayor of Tsu City, as well as Mie Gyoren, the organizer.

NTT West Mie Group will continue to take part in activities to protect the diverse biological environment.
