Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 176Participation in the Tokushima Downtown Flower Road Project - 5th Flower Planting Event May 15, 2016 NTT West Tokushima Group

On May 15 (Sunday), NTT West Tokushima Group took part in the "5th Flower Planting Event" of the "Tokushima Downtown Flower Road Project" as part of the "Midori Ippai Project." The activity was hosted by the NPO "Shinmachi-gawa wo Mamoru Kai (Association to Preserve Shinmachi River)."

Despite falling on a non-working day, a total of more than 200 people, including 60 from Tokushima Group and participants from NPOs, local neighborhood associations, co-sponsors and university student volunteers, showed up on the day of the event.

The opening ceremony kicked off after the participants gathered at the Aibahama Park at 8:00 a.m. At the opening address, Mr. Nakamura, Chairman of NPO Shinmachi-gawa wo Mamoru Kai, said that this activity to gather volunteers stemmed from the desire to offer a pleasant experience to tourists as well as residents of the city, and the goal is to transform Tokushima into a city of flowers by the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games with the help of everyone. He also expressed the hope to involve as many residents as possible in this effort. After the speech, staff from the NPO explained the way to plant the 13,000 petunias.

At the end of the opening ceremony, the participants were divided into seven groups, and each group was assigned to the flowerbeds and planting zones at one of the designated locations for planting the petunias, which extended from the front of Tokushima Station to Awaodori Kaikan, and from the front of Awagin Hall to the City Government Office. Tokushima Group was assigned to plant the flowers at 10 flowerbeds located on the Motomachi road divider.
When the Tokushima Group participants were cleaning up after planting was completed, they were approached by the secretariat staff who requested them to assist those who have not completed their planting as there were many experienced participants in the Tokushima Group. Everyone in the Group helped out in response to the request.

The participants gathered at the meeting point (Aibahama Park) and took a commemorative photo at the end of the event with a sense of fulfilment.
NTT West Tokushima Group hopes to raise the awareness toward the importance of having flowers and greenery in public areas and cultivate a sense of attachment for the local community through such an environment by continuing to engage in planting activities at the planting zones and flowerbeds in the downtown area of Tokushima City.

Before calling it a day, participants who have engaged in the planting work since morning were treated to a heartwarming bowl of hot udon noodles at the Hyotan Island Cruise Terminal at Ryokokubashi that is operated by Shinmachi-gawa wo Mamoru Kai.
