Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 157Participation in the "Tori-ga-Saezuru Midori-no-Kairo 11th Tree Planting Event" March 26, 2016 NTT West Kitakyushu Group

Following last year, this was the third time NTT West Kitakyushu Group participated in the Midori Ippai Project by taking part in the "Tori-ga-Saezuru Midori-no-Kairo 11th Tree Planting Event" on March 26 (Saturday). (Hosted by Tori-ga-Saezuru Midori-no-Kairo Tree Planting Event Executive Committee and co-hosted by Kitakyushu City)

On the day of the event, a total of about 1,500 residents and members of groups, including 53 participants who are employees and family members of the NTT West Kitakyushu Group, showed up at the venue near Kitakyushu City Eco-Town Center in Wakamatsu Ward of Kitakyushu City to take part in the tree planting activity.

After the opening ceremony, participants moved to the venue of the activity while watching the saplings that were planted during the event in the past years. They planted about 5,000 saplings that sprouted from acorns.

A "green base" known as "biotope" (*biotope is a term that refers to the habitat of a biological community) is built at the Hibiki-nada Reclaimed Area of Wakamatsu Ward, and tree saplings grown from acorns were planted along the 4km route that leads to Mount Ishimine to form a green corridor.
Wildlife animals such as flying squirrels live in the nearby mountains, so growing more trees and protecting the forests will help to widen the area of the animals' habitats, thereby enriching the biodiversity particularly in the forests.

Creation of the green corridor is open to participation by residents of the city.
For the saplings that are planted at the event, elementary school children of Wakamatsu Ward would start to pick up acorns one to two years prior to the event and plant them in pots, which are then taken care of by the residents at places such as their home or workplace.

While it was still chilly on the day of the event, employees of NTT West and their family members worked up a good sweat while learning to cope with the tree planting work which they were not familiar with.

Kitakyushu Group will continue to take part in this activity in future.
