On November 21 (Saturday), NTT West Kagoshima Group took part in the FY2015 "Kyushu Forest Day" Tree Planting Ceremony that was hosted by Kagoshima Prefecture, Kagoshima Forest Department and Kagoshima Midori no Kikin (Kagoshima Green Foundation).

"Kyushu Forest Day" was established as part of the "Joint Declaration on Forest Creation in Kyushu," which was announced in 2008 by the seven Kyushu prefectures and the Kyushu Regional Forest Office. The Tree planting ceremony is held every year in Kagoshima Prefecture as an activity to protect and nurture the forests for them to be handed down to future generations.

This year, the ceremony was held at the "Kenmin no Mori (Prefectural Residents' Forest) Nikke" district located in Mizobe-cho of Kirishima City. A total of about 500 people from the Green Scouts group, Forest Volunteers group and companies took part in the event. 70 employees and family members from the NTT West Kagoshima Group participated in the ceremony and the tree planting activities.

Donations from each company were presented at the beginning of the opening ceremony. Mr. Ishii, Manager of Planning and General Affairs Department, presented the donation on behalf of NTT West Kagoshima Group to Kagoshima Midori no Kikin (Kagoshima Green Foundation).

Under the guidance of staff from the Forest Department on how to plant trees and what precautions to take, about 1,000 Japanese maple and camellia saplings were planted at an area that was installed with nets to prevent deer from entering. Standing on the slippery hill surface, participants carefully planted each sapling with the hope that they would grow up healthily into big trees.
The activity lasted for about 1.5 hours, and children who took part in the event participated earnestly in this unique experience.
Participants were presented with saplings of day lily and fujibakama (eupatorium fortunei) by the organizer at the end of the event.

NTT West Kagoshima Group will continue to actively promote environmental conservation activities that are closely tied to the local community, including maintenance of forests.
