LINE 137 FY 2015 Yoshino River Mass Cleaning Activity (Adopt Program Yoshino River)

Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 137FY 2015 Yoshino River Mass Cleaning Activity (Adopt Program Yoshino River) July 14, 2015 NTT West Tokushima Group

NTT West Tokushima Branch and the group companies in the prefectural region took part in the "Yoshino River Mass Cleaning Activity," which was co-hosted by the Yoshinogawa Interaction Promotion Council and Tokushima Office of River and National Highway (Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, Transport and Tourism).

As part of the activities for the River Protection Month, the "Yoshino River Mass Cleaning Activity" is scheduled on the first Sunday of July every year. This year, the first Sunday fell on July 5, but the event was postponed to July 11 (Saturday) due to heavy rain.

The event is intended at preventing illegal dumping and spreading the concept of river protection, and focuses on activities to beautify Yoshino River by both the public and private sectors with support from residents who live along the river. The month of July has been designated as the River Protection Month, and efforts to spread the concept of river protection started since 1974 with the hope to deepen one's understanding and interest toward rivers while ensuring that the rivers are maintained in a clean and safe condition so as to gain more widespread appreciation for river protection.

The Adopt Program is a project that divides the riverbed of Yoshino River into segments, and applications by groups or companies are invited to "adopt" each of the riverbed segments.

Participants will become the "foster parent" of the riverbed segment they are in charge of, which is their "foster child," and cleanup and beautification activities are carried out periodically (at least three times a year).
The plan is to clean and beautify a 600m segment of riverbed and levee on the left bank that is 1,400m to 2,000m upstream from the mouth of Yoshino River.

Despite falling on a non-working day, a total of about 80 participants, including employees and family members of NTT group companies as well as retired employees, gathered at 8:00 a.m. to take part in the cleanup activity, which lasted for about an hour.

The amount of trash collected included 25 bags of combustible garbage, 60 bags of non-combustible garbage (including recyclable wastes), bulky trash such as car tires, hard rubber hoses, iron sheets, driftwood, polystyrene foam boxes, plastic containers and video decks. A huge pile of garbage was gathered in about an hour, which exceeded the amount collected during the previous activity in March.

In the closing address, Mr. Fujieda, Manager of NTT West Tokushima Branch, expressed that the activity to clean up Yoshino River is carried out as part of the group's social action program to contribute to the local community. He hopes that maintaining the Yoshino River in a clean and beautiful state will help to enhance greater awareness toward the environment and broaden the network of people who take good care of rivers. Lastly, he added that the activity will continue in the future, and hopes that everyone will give their support.

The event ended with a group photo-taking with the beautified Yoshino River as the background. We believe it was a great day for everyone who took part in the activity.
