LINE 134 Pine Forest Conservation Activity at Fukui Beach of Itoshima City

Following last year, this is the third time NTT West Fukuoka Group participated in the pine forest conservation activity held as part of the "Midori Ippai Project" at Fukui Beach of Itoshima City.

Blessed with good weather on the day of the event, participants took part in the activities including branch picking, pine-needle raking and grass cutting with support from "Satohama-tunagi-tai," a network formed by the local residents.
As described below, this activity is a very effective way to prevent "pine wilt" due to damage caused by "pine weevils."

(1) Branch picking:
Helps to exterminate pine wood nematodes that may hide in the dead branches.

(2) Pine-needle raking:
Prevents them from turning into leaf mold if left unattended.
(Lean soil such as sandy areas on the beach is suited for the growth of pine trees. They will grow up stronger when there is only a limited amount of nutrients.)

(3) Grass cutting:
Allows people to walk through the pine forest more easily. Having more people walking in and out of the forest helps to reduce the number of longhorn beetles that are attracted to the trees.

Itoshima's famous "Nigi no Matsubara," which was selected as one of Japan's 100 Best Beaches with White Sand and Blue Pine, lost a large number of pine trees due to pine wilt. Although tree planting activities are ongoing to help reproduce the trees, it will take a long time before the pine grove can be restored to its original state.

We will continue with our endeavor to prevent the pine forest of Fukui Beach where our activities are held from suffering the same damage.
