Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 131Participation in the "Tori-ga-Saezuru Midori-no-Kairo 10th Tree Planting Event" March 28, 2015 NTT West Kitakyushu Group

Following last year, this was the second time NTT West Kitakyushu Group participated in the Midori Ippai Project by taking part in the "Tori-ga-Saezuru Midori-no-Kairo 10th Tree Planting Event" on March 28 (Saturday). About 40 employees and family members of the Group gave their support by participating in the event, which was hosted by the Tori-ga-Saezuru Midori-no-Kairo Tree Planting Event Executive Committee and co-hosted by Kitakyushu City.

A "green base" known as "biotope" is built at the Hibiki-nada Reclaimed Area of Wakamatsu Ward, and trees grown from acorns were planted along the 4km route that leads to Mount Ishimine to form a green corridor. This event is open to participation by the local residents.

By allowing small animals such as flying squirrels living in the nearby mountains to move from tree to tree and back and forth between the green base and the mountain, biodiversity in the area can be further enriched.
Acorns picked up by the elementary school children of Wakamatsu Ward are planted in pots and taken care of by the residents at places such as their home or workplace for one to two years before they are planted.

On the day of the event, a total of about 1,500 residents and members of groups showed up at the venue near Kitakyushu City Eco-Town Center. At the opening ceremony, a speech was delivered by Mr. Kitahashi, mayor of Kitakyushu City, and an environmental declaration was made by a representative from an elementary school near the event venue.

After the opening ceremony, participants moved to the venue of the activity while watching the saplings that were planted during the event in the past years. About 11,000 saplings were planted. This was more than twice of that planted at the previous year's event.
On this clear day that was unlike the usual weather in late March, employees of NTT West and their family members worked up a good sweat while learning to cope with the hard soil.

NTT West Kitakyushu Branch Group will continue to take part in this activity in future.
