Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 115Nature Experience Program at the "Forest of Symbiosis" April 26, 2015 NTT West Group

It is important for us to learn about nature and interact with it in order to ensure biodiversity.

We conducted a woodworking class for children using materials that are obtained from the "Forest of Symbiosis," the forest where our tree planting activities are carried out.

The Forest of Symbiosis used to be a landfill site for industrial wastes. Thanks to everyone's support in the tree planting activities, the place has grown into a lush forest over the years. In this round of event, we conducted a workshop to learn how to make pendants using items that are produced by the Forest of Symbiosis, including leaves, the top layer of the acorn, pine needles, small branches, seeds of tree nuts and sheets made from pruned wood.

After explaining each of the items to be used, participants who are mainly family groups enjoyed making things they like through trial and error. Some groups used the top layer of the acorn to make eyes, while others used it for making the cheek or hair. Although the same materials were used, each group created unique pendants that were different from others.

Also, a sawing workshop was conducted for the children. Holding the saw in their small hands, they were rather clumsy at first, but gradually became much sturdier at handling the tool. When they finally succeeded in cutting wood using the saw, their expressions conveyed a sense of achievement as well as excitement and pride that even their parents would be proud of.

Today, we are slowly losing touch with things in the nature such as trees and forests. It is very important to ensure that we interact with nature in order to protect it. By allowing children to get a feel of the materials produced by nature, we hope to enhance their awareness toward nature protection as they grow up.

Lastly, we would like to thank "Nature Osaka" for planning and running the game activities as well as conducting the classes.
