On December 1, 2018 (Saturday), NTT West Tokai Group held a "Higashiyama Forest Restoration Project" activity at Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
Held as part of the social action program of Tokai Group titled "forest thinning for forestation of satoyama (village forest)," this is the second round of activity for the project to maintain the forest in Higashiyama Zoo and Botanical Gardens.
Trees that are left to grow without care in the forest cause damage to one another and block out sunlight needed for growth, so "thinning" by cutting down some of the trees is essential from the perspective of environmental conservation.
After the opening ceremony on the day of the event, a total of 35 participants from Tokai Group were divided into four teams, who entered the dense forest and started the tree thinning work under the guidance of staff from the botanical garden.
Some of the trees had a trunk diameter of more than 10cm, so a considerable amount of strength is needed to cut the trees. Nonetheless, participants engaged boldly in the cutting work with a saw.
Cutting down the trees one by one felt more exhausting than it seemed, and the participants have put in a great deal of effort while perspiring from the work despite the early winter weather.
Saws were used for the cutting activity which involved the risk of injuries. Nonetheless, all the participants worked together and completed their work in about an hour without any injury.
They felt a sense of achievement when sunlight starts to reach the roots of the trees and transform the dark forest into a lively and bright place.
To commemorate this project, a monument made from a single log using only chainsaw was also unveiled before the start of the activity.
NTT West Tokai Group will continue to raise awareness toward environmental protection by engaging in social action programs that can be participated and supported by our employees and their family members.
