Midori Ippai Project Activities LINE 234Refresh Setouchi - Horseshoe Crab Breeding Ground Cleaning Activity July 30, 2017 NTT West Okayama Group

On July 30, 2017 (Sunday), a total of 37 employees of NTT West Okayama Group and their family members took part in the "Horseshoe Crab Breeding Ground Cleaning Activity" at Kasaoka Bay (Okayama Prefecture) organized by Kasaoka City.

This event is named "Refresh Setouchi," and is part of the efforts by the "Setouchi Sea Road Network Promotion Council" that is made up of national organizations as well as prefectures, cities and towns along the coast of Seto Inland Sea to protect the beautiful Setouchi area.
Launched in 1993, this year marks the 25th round of "Refresh Setouchi." The amount of trash that was collected from the breeding grounds of horseshoe crabs last year was as much as six tons.

The sea between Konoshima and Nishi-oshima of Kasaoka Bay, which is the breeding ground for horseshoe crabs, is designated as a national natural monument where sandy beaches suitable for spawning and tidal flats said to be an ideal home for the larvae still exist. During the spawning season every year, it is possible to catch a rare glimpse of horseshoe crabs, which are known as "living fossils" with an appearance that remains unchanged for the past 200 million years.

It was cloudy on the day of the event, and all the participants gathered at the Katashima area of Kasaoka City to take a group photo before they engaged in the cleaning activity together with other groups along the coast over a 3km stretch upstream using trash bags distributed to them.

The cleaning activity lasted for about an hour, and participants collected mainly nylon and plastic bag trash. Some of the participants were drenched with sweat while they carried trash bags full of garbage to the collection point.
We hope that this activity to clean up the shore will be of some help to make the area a better habitat for horseshoe crabs and other living things.

NTT West Okayama Group will continue to maintain the beauty of Setouchi and engage in environmental conservation activities.
