Trial Fiber-optic IP Connection Service Scheduled for Launch

NTT West and NTT East plan to launch a new high-speed fiber-optic IP connection service on a trial basis beginning December 26, 2000.

Service outline

NTT West and NTT East will commence a trial network service that connects customers to their contracted Internet service providers (ISPs) through the NTT West and NTT East regional IP network using fiber-optic subscriber lines that run directly to customer homes and buildings. The service will allow subscribers to access their ISPs at connection speeds of up to 10 Mbps.

We are now examining a transmission method of fiber-optic subscriber lines that offer connection speeds of up to 100 Mbps, introducing around the spring of 2001.

At the request of ISPs, we will also provide an access service that directly links ISPs and NTT West and NTT East central offices.

Objectives of trial service

(i) Evaluate transmission quality and communications features from the perspective of subscribers and ISPs
(ii) Gauge future demand under a variety of use scenarios
(iii) Evaluate methodologies for the installation and operation of fiber-optic subscriber lines
(iv) Evaluate a variety of transmission protocols and hardware architectures for fiber-optic subscriber lines

Scheduled trial service period

Six months, beginning December 26, 2000 (planned)

1.An outline of the trial service through the NTT West and NTT East regional IP networks

1.1 Service highlights

(i) This is a "best-effort" service that subscribers can access their ISPs at connection speeds of up to 10 Mbps through fiber-optic lines.
(ii) The fiber-optic IP connection service utilizes the 10Base-T, standard LAN terminal interface. PPPoE [Note] is the protocol enlisted for ISP selection.

Note:
PPP over Ethernet (PPPoE). PPP is a popular protocol utilized for the authentication of user IDs and passwords during establishing dial-up connections. The PPPoE protocol build PPP sessions and encapsulate PPP packets over Ethernet.
