Commencement of Full-scale Fiber-optic IP Connection Service B-FLET'S

NTT West announced today that it has notified the Minister of Public Management, Home Affairs, Posts and Telecommunications of Japan of rates for "B-FLET'S," a broadband version of FLET'S.
Since December 26, 2000, we have offered a trial of a "Fiber-optic IP Connection Service (tentative name)*," a high-speed, flat-rate Internet access service via the fiber-optic subscriber line.
To better meet customer demand for higher throughput and lower price, we have made the following improvements to the trial version in order to address the challenges of broadband technology. The result is "B-FLET'S."
* For details of the service, see Supplement 3.

1. Outline of Services

We will offer a "Best-Effort" network service by which subscribers can access their contracted Internet Service Providers (ISPs) through the NTT West regional IP network of fiber-optic subscriber lines.
With the start of B-FLET'S service, we will add an access option of up to 100 Mbps, as well as review the 10 Mbps access option that is being offered on a trial basis, including procuring a reduction in rates of around 50 percent by sharing a single fiber-optic subscriber line among multiple users.

2. Features

(1) A "Best-Effort" network service* by which subscribers can access their ISPs at connection speeds of up to either 100 Mbps or 10 Mbps through fiber-optic subscriber lines

*

Actual throughput will vary and depends on network conditions and other factors. NTT West cannot guarantee the speed of the service.

(2) A standard LAN interface (100 Base-TX and 10 Base-T) will be used. PPPoE* will be used for the selection of ISPs.

*

PPPoE (Point-to-Point Protocol over Ethernet):

PPP is a protocol commonly used to authenticate a dial-up connection through a user ID and password. PPPoE is a protocol for setting up PPP over an Ethernet.

3. Service options for B-FLET'S

The following three service options will be available.
The following three service options will be available.
*1 Available for condominium buildings with a contract unit of at least ten subscribers per line
*2 PNA (Phoneline Networking Alliance): Hardware that uses existing internal metal telephone wiring to create a LAN

(2) Monthly charges
Monthly charges
*1 The ISP's services fees are not included.
*2 After an application is filed, NTT West will conduct an on-site survey into the use of a local cluster cable installed by NTT West. Charges will be determined on the basis of the findings.
*3 Necessary when renting NTT West's terminal (PNA) in a condominium building without LAN or other appropriate wiring.
